How to Fill a DIY Advent Calendar With Christmas Blind Bags

by Thetinyrelics on Aug 18, 2026
Red Christmas mystery bags with glowing resin holiday figurines

A DIY Advent calendar is more satisfying when every compartment holds a real surprise, but the planning matters. If the gifts are too large, the doors will not close. If the best items all appear in the first week, the countdown can feel flat by mid-December. Christmas blind bags solve part of that problem by keeping each day sealed and unknown.

This guide uses TINYRELICS' Glow-in-the-Dark Christmas Mini Resin Blind Bags. Each sealed bag contains one small festive resin charm. The bags measure approximately 2.28 × 2.75 inches (58 × 70 mm), while the figurines are around 0.87 × 0.71 inches (22 × 18 mm). Start with those measurements before choosing or building the calendar.

1. Check all 24 compartments before you buy fillers

Reusable Advent calendars vary more than they appear to. Some have 24 identical drawers; others combine small doors with a few larger pockets. Measure the interior width, height, and depth of the smallest compartment, then compare that space with the sealed-bag dimensions—not just the figurine inside.

If a bag is slightly too wide, do not force it into a rigid drawer. Instead, use numbered envelopes, fabric pockets, or a hanging calendar with flexible openings. Another option is to place a small numbered card in the compartment and keep the matching sealed bag in a basket nearby. The surprise still belongs to that date without crushing the packaging.

2. Decide whether every day needs the same type of surprise

A simple calendar can hold one blind bag behind every door. A mixed calendar alternates blind bags with written activities, favorite snacks, ornaments, or small personal notes. The second approach works well when you want a varied countdown or when some compartments are much smaller than others.

Write the 24-day plan before filling anything. A quick list prevents accidental gaps and makes it easier to spread the blind bags across the month. You might place them on weekends, on busy school or work nights, or on dates when a small ready-to-open gift is especially convenient.

3. Arrange the pacing, not the hidden designs

The appeal of a mystery bag is that the figurine stays unknown until it is opened. You do not need to open and sort the contents in advance. Instead, control what you can see: the date, the wrapping, and the rhythm of the countdown.

For example, place blind bags on every other day, then use the remaining dates for notes or activities. If all 24 days use blind bags, vary the presentation: add a ribbon to Christmas Eve, tuck a short message behind each bag, or group the final week under a different color of number label.

4. Keep the numbers easy to follow

Numbered doors are useful only when the recipient can find the right one. Use high-contrast labels and keep the number in the same position on every pocket, envelope, or drawer. If the calendar is meant to be opened in order, mix the physical placement of the numbers while keeping them large enough to read.

When several people share the calendar, add initials or a color code. That is clearer than trying to remember which person opens which date, and it keeps the sealed bags from being moved around after the countdown begins.

5. Plan the glow for after opening

The figurines absorb room light or sunlight before glowing in darkness. After a bag is opened, place the figurine under light before testing the glow. The calendar itself does not need to sit in a bright window, and the gifts can remain sealed until their assigned day.

A small tray beside the calendar gives the opened figures somewhere to collect. By the end of the countdown, the tray becomes a growing holiday display instead of a pile of loose pieces. Santas and snowmen can be arranged around a card, miniature tree, or another existing decoration without permanently attaching them.

6. Use a bulk pack without overfilling the calendar

The Christmas blind bags are offered in 50-, 100-, and 200-bag packs. A standard 24-day calendar uses only part of the smallest pack, so decide on the extras before ordering. That is more useful than squeezing multiple bags into every compartment simply because they are available.

Extra sealed bags can be reserved for stocking stuffers, place settings, classroom or office handouts where appropriate, or a second countdown shared with another household. If you are splitting a pack across multiple uses, label each group as soon as it arrives. Our blind-bag pack planning guide offers a simple method for counting recipients and keeping a small buffer.

7. Do one complete test run

Fill the smallest drawer, close it, and reopen it. Hang one loaded pocket and make sure it does not sag. Check that the calendar remains stable when several compartments are full. Then view it from the usual distance to confirm that the date labels are readable.

This five-minute test catches the practical problems that styling photos miss: tight doors, hidden numbers, top-heavy pockets, or a calendar that no longer sits flat. Make those adjustments before loading all 24 dates.

Build a countdown that stays surprising

A good Advent calendar balances anticipation with a setup that works every day. Measure the compartments, choose a consistent numbering system, spread the surprises across the month, and give opened figurines a place to become part of the display.
