A Color Wheel Small Enough to Wear

by Thetinyrelics on Aug 04, 2026

Most enamel pins are finished once they are fastened. This one is only getting started.

At the center of our rotating color wheel pin is a small planet, surrounded by a twelve-color ring and a black upper layer cut with windows. Turn the top disc and the relationships shift: complementary, triadic, analogous. It feels half studio reference, half tiny mechanical object.

I keep thinking about the moment in a project when two colors are individually right but wrong together. A full color chart can help, of course, but it is usually pinned to a wall or buried under other papers. A wheel this small does not replace the larger tools. It simply keeps the basic relationships close enough to consult when a sketch, palette, or layout begins to drift.

The pin is 1.2 inches (30 mm) across. That gives the twelve-color ring enough room to remain readable while keeping the circular shape tidy on a jacket, apron, canvas pouch, or pencil case. Gold-toned lines separate the colors against a deep black ground, so the face reads more like a little instrument than a novelty badge.

The rotating construction also changes how the pin is handled. You can spin it while thinking, then pause when a useful combination appears. It is a modest motion—nothing flashing or noisy—but that small physical step can be a pleasant way to interrupt staring at the same screen.

On the back, two posts help hold the round pin steady while the front layer turns. That detail matters. A single post would allow the whole piece to pivot on fabric; the pair gives the moving face a firmer base.

The listing comes as a four-pack, which makes sense for a shared studio or classroom. One can live on an apron, one in a supply pouch, and the others can be passed to an art student, designer, painter, or the friend who is always adjusting a palette by two percent.

I also like it as a gift because it does not insist on being inspirational. It is useful, a little strange, and clearly made for someone who notices color. That tends to feel more personal than another blank sketchbook.

You can see the mechanism, dimensions, and full set on the Rotating Artist Color Wheel Enamel Pin page.

Some tools stay on the desk. This one gets to travel with the person using it.
